Owner Joanne explained: "We found out about him at a puppy mill when he was two years old. They said he had no quality of life and he was to be euthanised. We rescued him and several others.
"He was very shy, he had never left that place. He was scared. He’s got scars on his face showing where other dogs have bitten him."
But, despite all of this pain Smiley had suffered, Joanne began to see the difference her new dog was making to those around him.
She said: "Within the year I started seeing peoples reaction when they met him. I could tell how he touched their lives, how different they felt after meeting him. I realised I needed to share him with as many people as I could."
Smiley now works in pet therapy and has changed the lives of many people who are sick or disabled.
