Ravi Shankar has died.

Sitar legend Ravi Shankar has died at the age of 92.

Over the course of the past year Shankar apparently suffered from upper-respiratory and heart issues. Thursday he underwent heart-valve replacement surgery, but was unable to recover from the procedure and passed away at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. Tuesday night.

Shankar is often noted for his influence on the Beatles, and for introducing traditional Indian music to the West on a broad scale. He was also the father of popular singer/songwriter Norah Jones.

Ravi Shankar who died on December 11, 2012 at the age of 92, is still a powerful and lasting influence on music. he granted international audiences access to a millenia-old Indian musical tradition. He brought Eastern elements-both tonal and rhythmic-into Western music.

May he be at peace.
