The reaction of the Chinese leaders is in stark contrast to that of the military rulers in Myanmar, where relief efforts following a devastating cyclone that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people have been poor, and aid has been refused entry into the country.

The earthquake affected eight provinces - Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs said in Beijing in a statement on Tuesday.

Joining in prayer for the victims of this tremendous earthquake in China. May rescue actions be successful for those still trapped and may all those in need of assistance receive it quickly.
May solidarity of the whole world bring alleviation to all the people suffering from the consequences of this disaster.

Adding my prayers for all the victims of the massive earthquake.

The worst hit areas remain inaccessible to rescuers, due to the remoteness and difficulty of the mountainous terrain of western Sichuan province. The death toll may continue to rise as officials are counting bodies as they discover them--and have recorded deaths in nearby provinces such as Gansu, Shaanxi and Yunnan, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
