Bird of time –
in Kyoto, pining
for Kyoto.

Hush, cawing birds; what rackets you make:
heaven's indignant messengers ...

The clouds are gone and sparrows

are telling each other tales.

Birds on the branches

in the evening darkness-

can they find berries?

its tiny mouth open.

not even a bird singing

in the mountain's shadow.

The behaviour of the pigeon

is beyond reproach,

but the mountain cuckoo?

the moon seals it.
