How shall I begin my song
In the blue night that is settling?
I will sit here and begin my song.

Brown owls comes here in the blue evening,
They are hooting about,
They are shaking their wings and hooting.

In the great night my heart will go out;
Towards me the darkness comes rattling,
In the great night my heart will go out.

Prayer for the Animals

Hear out humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any who are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to sleep. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us be true friends to animals and so to share the blessing of the merciful.

Cat's Prayer

The author is unknown.

Although I am too proud to beg, and may appear to be a very independent creature, I ask for your loving care and attention. I rely on you for my well being much more than you realize.

This I promise you, my benefactor, that I will not be a burden on you nor will I demand more of you than you care to give.

I will be a quiet peaceful island of serenity for you to gaze upon; a soft smoothing body to caress, and I shall purr with pleasure to rest your weary ears.

Since I am a gourmet who appreciates different taste sensations, I pray you will give me a variety of nutritious foods and fresh water daily.

You know dear friend, how I love to go. Allow me, I pray, a warm sheltered place where I can rest peacefully and feel secure.

If I am wounded in battle or suffering from disease, please tend to me gently, and see that am treated by loving and competent hands.

Please protect me from inhuman humans who would hurt and torture me for their own amusement. I am accustomed to your gentle touch and am not always suspicious nor swift enough to avoid such malicious acts.

In my later years when my senses fail me and my infirmities become to great to bear, allow me the comfort and dignity that I desire for my closing days and help me gently in my pain or passing.

Hear this prayer, my dear friend, my fate depends on you.

(My Prayer for the Animals)

I am unified with all creatures I shall ever meet, and they with me, for we are all manifestations of the One Presence. All Gods creatures are my brothers and sisters. I follow the example of the Masters and treat every living thing with kindness. I recognize the Divine Presence within and around me, and in all creatures. The God Presence watches over my beloved animals and keeps my companions safe and healthy. Gratefully acknowledging and gladly receiving this benediction, I live and move and accept its fullest in love and trust. If there is anything in me that denies this Presence, this Power, or this Oneness, I release it and let it go now.

And so it is.

An Animals Prayer

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then, you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, cant be won.

Dont let grief stay your hand
For this day, more than rest
Your love and friendship stand the test.
Weve had so many happy years.

What is to come can hold no fear,
Youd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs theyll tend,
Only, stay with me to the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will see,
It is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering, Ive been saved.

Dont grieve, it should be you,
Who this thing decides to do.
Weve been so close, we two, these years,
Dont let your heart hold any tears.

An Unborn Animals Prayer

"I ask for the privilege of not being born...not to be born until you can assure me of a home and a human to protect me, and a right to live as long as I am physically able to enjoy life...not to be born until my body is precious and men have ceased to exploit it because it is cheap and plentiful.

For All Animals:

Blessed are you the Divine,
maker of all living creatures.
On the fifth and sixth days of creation,
you called forth fish in the sea,
birds in the air and animals on the land.
You inspired St. Francis to call all animals
his brothers and sisters.
We ask you to bless this animal.
By the power of your love,
enable it to live according to your plan.
May we always praise you
for all your beauty in creation.
Blessed are you, Great Spirit, in all your creatures

Amen.

From the Shelter Dog

Now that I'm home,
bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked into warm new bed,
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.

Hmm . . . Yes there it is,
Right on top -
Let's unpack Loneliness,
Heartache and Loss.
And there by my leash hides
Fear and Shame.

As I look on these things
I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my
baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others,
the ones who left me.
But I was't good enough -
for they didn't want me.

Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things
and take me right back?

Do you have the time
to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage
to never repack?

I pray that you do -
I'm tired you see.

But I do come with baggage -

Will you still want me?

The Hunter's Poem
By Lemuel T. Ward

A hunter shot at a flock of geese that flew within his reach.
Two were stopped in their rapid flight and fell on the sandy beach.

The male bird lay at the water's edge and just before he died,
He faintly called to his wounded mate and she dragged herself to his side.
She bent her head and crooned to him in a way distressed and wild,
Caressing her one and only mate as a mother would a child.
Then covering him with her broken wing and gasping with failing breath,
She laid her head against his breast, a feeble honk . . .
then death.

This story is true, though crudely told. I was the man in this case.
I stood knee-deep in snow and cold, and the hot tears burned my face.
I buried the birds in the sand where they lay, wrapped in my hunting coat.
And I threw my gun and belt in the bay, when I crossed in the open boat.
Hunters will call me a right poor sport and scoff at the thing I did,
But that day something broke in my heart, and shoot again?
God forbid.
