Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866. She was a lonely child and later as a young woman, she studied art and natural history. She spent many holidays with her family in Scotland in the Lake District where she acquired her love for the countryside. She started her career as a children's author and illustrator in 1901. She bought land in the Lake District in 1913, and on her marriage to solicitor William Heelis , she moved there permanently. Today her little books, which depict stories of all kinds of animals that she saw in the countryside, sell in their millions, translated into over 15 languages, and the pleasures of her timeless tales are enjoyed by children all over the world.
