I like both the straightly rendered stuff and the pieces you have "jazzed up." I think they both have their appropriate place in the archive. If one does happen to have the ability to mess around with midi, these are all great source tracks. Who knows where this work might show up either as is, or transformed?

As you know, I'm with you on the notion that midi which can be written in real time by playing into a sequencer is a performance medium and that one ought to be able to claim some rights to midi files. Whether this is impossible by design has yet to be proven. I know when I download them I do get the authoring information if I go to "get info." Good show. Whoever gets these should see there is a record of who created them.

Even without that, these files you have shared with us certainly have the author's signature on them simply because the style is unique and the playing is recognizable to anyone who knows this artist's work. It's better, obviously, that you were able to write in the credits.

I wouldn't use any of it without citing my source. You would hope anyone else will feel the same way. If not, it would be sort of like art theft - a fanciful idea that is hard to get away with - because of the issue of uniqueness. Some art theives do get away with passing stolen work to people without scruples who pay them for it. In the case of paintings, generally such a collector would have to hide what they have stolen to get away with keeping it. Who would steal music and then hide it? A deaf person?

There's a catch. I think I like it.

I hadn't listened to that mockingbird for a while. It's diabolical.

My friend Ms. M. who lives on the warm side of San Francisco told me she had a bird visiting her yard a few days ago, and she remembered two different songs it was singing and whistled them for me. I told her it had to be a mockingbird. I think at this time of the year they try to be mistaken for nightingales and almost succeed except when they change their tune.

Dona Nobis Pacem, followed by "Sing for your supper and you'll get breakfast, songbirds never starve."
But don't forget that the early worm gets eaten by the early bird!

Like you said more classical dudes defect to rock than vice versa. There is room for both. Sometimes progressive jazz is pure classical improv. I keep citing Tyner and Jarrett who everyone in the Oberlin Piano department loved when my girlfriend was majoring in straight classical.

I like the notion of a midi Piano Pedagogy thing. My friend Jeff and I were knocking around the meaning of that word pedagogy (ending like gohji). A pedagogue is a teacher from the latin of course. Add religion and the equivalent term is catechism (pr cat eh kism from the greek). The stuff you gotta know.

I'm a slouch myself. I missed an opportunity to buy a cheap cello. I really have no place to put it but it is where my sight-reading skills can find some continuity. A lot of the method exercises are from Bach and others and it always feels good to start on the easy works and move up to more challenging ones. I think you're on a good path that way. It's a real opportunity - just to let the living stuff immerse you by getting familiar with it. People who aren't trained to do it on some level don't what they're missing.

The place to begin is pure enjoyment of it even before one has touched an instrument. I think Peter and the Wolf was one piece that gripped me as child. After the Duck gets killed a reed instrument remembers him. That impressed me. I must have been about six when I first went to that. They had actors on the stage and a narrator.

I flash immediately on the theme. Music is magic. I know I'm preaching to the converted writing this to Teo. I figured I'd pick up the conversation in a semi-private place. Are we not most fortunate, those of us who had someone around who appreciated music literature?

Correct: I did succeed in 1) putting COPYRIGHTS and ARTIST "tags" into the files, in the artist tag I put the keyboard I used, the sequencing (recording) software, of course my name, and a link to Givnology. In the CopyRight tag I put the artists full name, opus number of the song, and sometimes who the song was written to or something halfways pertinent. It can be deleted by a crook, but isn't that just like just about everything we "carefully place" on the internet?

I have a sneaking suspicion that the server logs, the history of what files were on what servers at what time is 1/2 of a copyright - a proof of ownership at least! I'm making a new copyright submission for all of my new material anyway, most all of my older songs and recording are secured.

Notice though, another post on Eric Satie, some of his music is distributed completely free to copy! Amazing, and I really like some of his music! It feels strange, one site gives 1/2 of a page free, another 2 pages, and another - after searching and searching - the whole 6 pages! What do you think of that? I wonder, if I link to ALL of the above sources, maybe I'm not being nice to the PAY ones, because I'm showing that somewhere else it is free! Nutty, eh?

the later one is funny, it's a devotional song to the ocean goddess Yemaya, redone as piano solo, but the NAME The See comes from Seer-Seeing-Seen of Buddhism, and strangely it is references as Buddhist, though it is also Yoruba (the Nigerian Orisha religion)!
