The flower that Chanel No.5 uses for its fragrance is 'Rosa Centifolia'. It is a rose of a hundred petals.
It comes from Grasse, a small town in the hills of Provence for the last 89 years.

Coco Chanel launched Chanel No.5 in 1921, and it was an immediate success, and since its creation it is still the best selling perfume in the world today.

Grasse is perched in the hills above Niece and Cannes and its flower fields have long been considered the world's capital of perfume. Grasse is far enough inland so that it is sheltered from the sea air, and it has fertile soil and a sunny and temperate climate which make it ideal for flower farming.

Rosa Centifolia blooms only once a year for about five weeks in May and early June. The prime picking time is between May 15 and 25.

In 1959 Chanel No.5 joined the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Thank you for the information yoko.

I don't use much perfume, but when I do I usually wear Chanel No. 5. I love the scent, and never get tired of it.

The Birth of Chanel No. 5
Chanel No. 5 is one of the most famous perfumes in history and sells around one bottle every 30 seconds. This famous fragrance was created for Coco Chanel in 1921 by a perfume creator named Ernest Beaux. Something which may seem surprising in a 21st century obsessed with getting back to nature is that Coco's inspiration behind the scent was to create something very artificial. She is quoted on the official Chanel website as saying “I want to give the world something artificial.... like a dress. Something that has been made.... I want a perfume that is a composition”. Ernest Beaux responded by creating a masterpiece inspired by the midnight sun, the lakes and the rivers of the Arctic circle which he had visited a year previously.

I just got some more information,

In 1964 Andy Warhol made the perfume the subjedct of 9 screen prints.

I personally do not like Andy Warhol, but neveretheless, he is an important and much liked artist.

Thank you yoko.
I love Chanel No.5, and everything that Coco Chanel created. I could never affort to buy her clothes, but I liked looking at them a few years ago. I don't like the new creations as much, but I still like the perfume.

Sincerely,
Gisele

Thank you for the post yoko.

I don't use much perfume, but Chanel No.5 is very popular all over the world. There is even a lot for sale in the Philippines.
I did not know that a special rose is used and the time to pick the petals is so important.

Love,
Vicky 2Hearts

Dear yoko,
thank you for the interesting post.

I love Chanel No.5, and I use it more than any other perfume. I never get tired of the lovely scent.

Like Vicky, I was not aware how exact the rose harvesting time is, and that it is such a short time.

Love,
Sue

Thank you for your replies.

To produce this perfume is quite an artform.
The chemistry of the rose's oil isso very complex, that it is impossible to reconstruct it completely, even in a laboratory.

Love,
yoko
