Due to glabal warming we may lose the polar bear.
The Arctic is warming more quickly than the rest of the world, and the ice is melting. The ice flows are where polar bears hunt seal, which is the main part of their diet.If there is no ice the bears have no food. Even if the bears don't starve to death they become too weak and malnourished to reproduce.
The Canadian governement needs to ensure that oil and gas exploration in the Arctic is limited.
But in the end, just as it took the whole world to put the polar bear into danger, it will take the whole world to pull it back.

The polar bears are truly in danger of becoming extinct.

Land needs to be set aside for the bear's habitat, and poaching needs to be eliminated or closely guarded. Far away countries that don't even know what a polar bear is need to take part in saving it.

Global warming is truly the culprit. The polar bear is in danger of becoming extinct.

Lately Canada has not really joined the worldwide anti-global warming effort. Canada should try to save the polar bear, since the bears live in Canada, and other species in danger due to climate change by cutting its own greenhouse emissions and working with other countries to lower global emission of greenhouse gases.

But as Sue mentioned, in the end, just as it took the whole world to put the polar bear into danger, it will take the whole world to pull it back

Climate change, which is causing the loss of older stable sea ice and the thinning, disappearance and moving offshore of older sea ice, is reducing essential polar bear habitats and is the great threat to their survival. Loss of sea ice leads to higher energy requirements to locate prey and a shortage of food. This causes higher mortality among cubs and reduction in size among first year cubs and adult males. For example, in Alaska 42% of cubs now reach 12 months of age, down from 65% 15 years ago. Another threat is human-caused mortality. Some bears are attracted by unsecured garbage and animal carcasses. This can eventually lead to conflicts between people and bears and lethal removal of the bear. Illegal killing (poaching) of bears also remains another factor causing their decline.

Last week, I went to Jean Lemire'a lecture about the mission he did in Antartica on the Sedna IV.

It was quite educational and the climate changes are occuring faster than what was anticipated years ago. He mentioned that each and every one of us can make a difference by making better choices in many areas of your lives, especially by supporting environmental groups as well as merchants and corporations who are that are taking measures to help the environment and be better citizens.

We should never forget that we can make a difference!

I read in the Globe and Mail newspaper today that the United States has listed the polar bear as a threatened species and it will try to protect the bears.

The classification will have ramifications in Canada by blocking the import into the U.S. of bear skins and other body parts from animals killed by U.S. trophy hunters.

It will also put pressure on Canada to offer similar protection. Canada currently gives the polar bears its lowest level of protection .

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Two prominent green groups on Thursday said Canada should follow the lead of the United States and take action to protect polar bears, which are threatened by melting ice.

Washington said on Wednesday it was listing the bears as a threatened species. Although Canada is home to around two-thirds of the world's 25,000 polar bears, Ottawa has not formally declared them in any kind of danger.

"Canada is lagging behind in its global responsibility to protect wildlife," said Rachel Plotkin, a biodiversity policy analyst at the David Suzuki Foundation.

An independent Canadian scientific advisory committee recommended in 2005 that Ottawa list polar bears -- which are divided up into 13 distinct populations across the Canadian Arctic -- as a species of special concern.

The then Liberal government asked for a reassessment but the committee said last month it was sticking to its position.

Environment Minister John Baird, part of the Conservative government that took power in 2006, will receive the new report in August.

He indicated on Wednesday he would agree to list bears as a species of special concern and said stronger measures might have to be taken to help the weaker sub-populations.
